BEM Unsoed – Beauty privilege menjadi sebuah istilah yang semakin sering disebut oleh masyarakat akhir-akhir ini. Seseorang dengan paras fisik yangrupawan akan mendapat perlakuan istimewa oleh orang di sekitarnya, begitu kira-kira pengertian beauty privilege.
Bahasan mengenai beauty privilege diangkat oleh Kementerian Pemberdayaan Perempuan BEM Unsoed melalui agenda Visitasi Fakultas yang ke-4 pada Sabtu (22/08) kemarin. Agenda ini merupakan agenda rutin yang diselenggarakan bersama dengan BEM fakultas/himpunan mahasiswa sebagai upaya pencerdasan dan wadah advokasi serta diskusi mahasiswa/i untuk membahas materi tentang isu gender.
Agenda VIFA ke-4 ini diselenggarakan bersama mahasiswa/i Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Unsoed serta himpunan mahasiswa yang berada di FIB. Pembicara yang didatangkan merupakan dosen sekaligus Ketua Jurusan Sosiologi FISIP Unsoed, Dr. Tyas Retno Wulan, M.Si. Agenda berlangsung secara online melalui Google Meet sejak pukul 18.30- 20.00 WIB.
Menurut Bu Tyas, konsep cantik sudah ada sejak dulu. Ada istilah katuranggan yang bisa diartikan penilaian berdasarkan fisiknya. Beauty privilege adalah hak istimewa seseorang karena fisiknya, dan dalam ilmu Sosiologi beauty privilege termasuk dalam ascribed status yang merupakan perolehan status sosial sejak lahir.
Selain beauty privilege, ada juga yang dinamakan beauty penalty. Beauty penalty merupakan ekspektasi orang yang terlalu tinggi terhadap seseorang yang memiliki fisik yang rupawan. Standarisasi perempuan cantik yang berkulit putih, berbadan langsing, dan memiliki rambut lurus di masyarakat adalah PR bagi kita untuk tidak terprovokasi.
Bu Tyas tidak setuju dengan beauty privilege karena hanya sebatas topeng saja. Yang lebih penting, kita punya jiwa yang cantik dan baik. Untuk memiliki hal tersebut, seseorang harus kokoh, mampu bertahan dalam kondisi apapun. Orang yang punya fisik menarik harus juga jadi orang yang helpful, rasa empati tinggi, dan mempunyai keyakinan terhadap apa yang dia miliki.
Agenda VIFA kali ini berjalan dengan baik terbukti dengan antusiasme jumlah dan keaktifan peserta. Harapannya agenda VIFA ini menjadi upaya pencerdasan dan edukasi serta sebagai wadah advokasi serta diskusi mahasiswa/i mengenai isu gender dilingkungan kampus khususnya dan di masyarakat umumnya.
